Saddling Up With the Posse, Round 2

PODCASTS

Saddling up with the
Plastic Posse Podcast

Next to time at the bench, there’s little better in the hobby than sitting around talking about, well, the hobby. I recently had the opportunity to do exactly that, and sat in with Scott, Doug, John, TJ, and newly-minted member Ivan Jensen Taylor to record Episode 30 of the Plastic Posse Podcast.

We riff on a number of modelling-related topics, talk about the PPP’s ongoing group builds, including their super-popular M3/M4 group build for the 2022 IPMS Nats, chat about two big new releases in the 1/32 Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (Late) and the 1/35 Tamiya M18 Hellcat, and finally, the episode features a great interview with Jason Champion of Champion Scale Modelling

Give Episode 30 a listen next time you’re looking for some great modelling content to fill your ears!

Striking Gold Out West

CONTESTS

Flying high after double-gold

On the heels of last month’s bronze medal in the IPMS Italia contest, I’m thrilled to share some success a *little* closer to home. Also faced with pandemic conditions preventing their annual live show, the Rocky Mountain Model Club likewise went the online route. Having now just finished the 1/350 Bandai Millennium Falcon, I paired it up with the Tamiya Bf109 as my two entries, and was pleased to have both score gold.

My thanks to the RMMC team for their time and effort to stage this event.

Gustav Scores Bronze in Italy

NEWS

Bronze-oh-nine in Italy!

Still grappling with pandemic conditions and unable to host live events, IPMS Italia staged an online competition earlier this spring. Having just finished my 1/72 Tamiya Bf109G-6, I thought it the ideal build to enter, and am pleased to share that it scored a bronze medal against some solid competition.

While I share the popular sentiment that online competitions are in many ways as much a photo competition as a modelling competition — at least when it comes to scrutineering a build — I’m no less pleased to have my work recognized and am that much more eager to show my work live for the first time.

Grazie mille to IPMS Italia for their time and effort to stage this event.

Making plans for 2021

Making plans for 2021, Part 1

Inspired by Plastic Model Mojo Episode 28, here’s the first half of some “plans” I’m working on for 2021, the builds. Listen to the episode here.

Projects / 3 builds in my scale and genre

A distinctly Canadian flavour for 2 of the 3 projects in my preferred scale/genre.

First up, a Royal Canadian Air Force CC-130H Hercules from 8 Wing in Trenton, Ontario. CFB Trenton sits just over an hour from my home and in the 80’s and 90’s was home to bi-annual airshows I attended often, and at which the Herc was a regular fixture of both static and aerial demonstrations. To this day, Hercules cross the skis over my home on missions and maneuvers. The  release of the new Zvezda kit finally makes this project a viable option without having to tangle the 40 year-old  Italeri kit.

Build two is something of a celebratory project. James “Stocky” Edwards, one of Canada’s leading aces of WWII celebrates his 100th birthday in 2021. Edwards had an extensive and distinguished flying career, most notably in Kittyhawks and Spitfires, and it will be one of these that forms the basis of the project. The (relatively) recent discovery of a Kittyhawk in the Sahara was in fact one Edward’s aircraft, though flown in this case by different pilot when lost.

Third up, Fine Molds F-4EJ Kai. When Fine Molds kicked off their F-4 series late last year, I was really excited to see a new, well-detailed Phantom kit in circulation. With the recent announcement of the offshore blue camouflage version Kai in the offshore blue scheme, I’ve phound the Phantom I’ve been waiting  phor!

Projects / 3 builds outside my scale and genre

Like David Knights at PMM, when Das Werk announced their S-9 U-boat submarine in 1/72 scale, I was on board from the outset. And like David, I’m thinking this will likely be Q3/Q4 build once some aftermarket starts to filter out.

Projects 2 and 3 indulges a soft spot for softskins with a double build of 1/72 and 1/35 M1240 MRAPs from Galaxy Hobby and Rye Field Model. The Galaxy kit is fantastically moulds, rivalling 1/48 or 1/35 kits in some of it’s detail. To take it notch further, I’m including each details from  Tetra Modelworks’, a brass Browning H2 .50 calibre, and a few more bits from Flyhawk. The big brother gets a few extras as well, including resin wheels from DEF Model, and of course, plenty of CARC paint!

That’s the easy part done. Next up, plans for improvement and for activities beyond the bench.

Give Episode 28 a listen for yourself, and let me and/or the boys at PMM known what your plans are for 2021 in the comments below!
